Bypass surgery of the eardrums
This is a surgical procedure to ins ert a shunt tube in to the eardrum to ensure the outflow of exudate and restore normal ventilation of the middle ear cavity.
Due to chronic diseases of the middle ear, such as exudative otitis media and chronic otitis media, fluid can accumulate behind the eardrum, causing pain, hearing loss and infections.
Bypass surgery allows the patient to get rid of congestion in the ear, ensure the outflow of the inflammatory process in acute otitis media, prevent hearing impairment and the risk of infection spreading into the cells of the mastoid process. The bypass procedure consists of installing small tubes (shunts) into the eardrum. These tubes allow fluid to flow out of the middle ear. Shunts remain in place for an average of 6 to 12 months.
Before shunting the eardrums, it is necessary to: Consult with an otorhinolaryngologist and an anesthesiologist Perform general blood and urine tests Perform audiometry to assess auditory function Perform a CT scan of the temporal bones
The surgeon makes a small incision in the eardrum, usually in the posterior-lower quadrant. After that, a shunt tube made of medical material is inserted into the hole, which allows you to ventilate the middle ear. Through the shunt, fluid flows freely from the middle ear, restoring hearing.
To bypass the eardrums, the following are used: Surgical instruments (scalpels, forceps) Ventilation tubes (shunts) of various sizes Operating microscope for visualization
After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to normal life, but it is recommended to avoid getting water into the ears and follow the doctor's recommendations on ear care. Minor pain and discomfort are possible.
Benefits
Hearing improvement
The procedure restores ventilation of the middle ear and improves auditory function.
Preventing infections
Shunts allow fluid to flow out of the middle ear, reducing the risk of infections.
Minimal invasiveness
The procedure is performed through a small incision and requires a short recovery period.
Individualization of the approach
Each procedure is developed taking into account the characteristics of the patient's disease, which increases the effectiveness of treatment.
