Lymphedema liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical treatment used for chronic lymphedema of the hand, particularly when the swelling is accompanied by excess fat deposits and limited mobility. Removing fibrofatty tissue reduces limb volume, improves hand function, and enhances the patient's overall well-being.
Hand lymphedema involves the accumulation of lymph fluid in the soft tissues. It can cause swelling, reduced mobility, thickening of the skin, and aesthetic discomfort. Lymphedema can be primary (congenital) or secondary (resulting from surgery, trauma, infection, or tumors).
During the initial consultation with the specialist (surgeon or lymphologist), the patient's symptoms, medical history, and expectations regarding the procedure will be discussed. As part of the preparation, it is also important to perform ICG lymphography of the affected limb. Health assessment and examinations will be performed, as well as a full diagnostic evaluation of the lymphatic system.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Through small incisions in the skin, the surgeon inserts a cannula to remove excess tissue. While the treatment does not directly affect the lymphatic vessels, it reduces the volume of the swollen area by removing the fibrous-fatty component. The hospital stay is approximately three days.
The procedure is performed using a liposuction machine, various diameter cannulas, anesthetic equipment, and sterile instruments for soft tissue surgery.
After the procedure, patients may be transferred to a rehabilitation program that includes wearing compression hosiery. This promotes better healing and reduces swelling. It is mandatory to wear two layers of compression hosiery for the first eight to twelve months.
