Trigger finger treatment
Comprehensive treatment of Knott's disease involving surgical intervention.
Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis or Knott's disease, is an inflammatory condition that affects the tendon sheaths of the flexor tendons in the hand. It causes one or more fingers to lock when bent, resulting in pain and limited mobility. This occurs when the tendon has difficulty passing under the annular ligament.
This condition primarily affects middle-aged women, particularly those with risk factors like hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and constant hand strain from manual labor.
Before treatment begins, you will have a consultation with a hand surgeon and undergo functional tests to assess the degree of movement restriction. An ultrasound examination of the hand may also be prescribed. No special preparation is required for the procedure.
Initial symptoms are treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy. In some cases, hormones may be injected into the annular ligament area. Severe symptoms require surgical intervention. The hand surgeon makes a small incision, cuts the constricting ligament, and restores tendon mobility.
The procedure is performed under magnification with the use of microsurgical instruments. Ultrasound navigation is used, if necessary, to accurately determine the area of inflammation.
After surgery, patients can typically use their hand again after 1–2 days, with limited activity. Recovery includes exercise, massage, and physical therapy if necessary. Full load is allowed within a few weeks.
