Intermaxillary fixation with screws
Temporary jaw stabilization in fractures and postoperative care.
This is an advanced method of temporarily stabilizing the jaw. It is used to treat fractures, after osteosynthesis, and during maxillofacial surgeries. Unlike traditional splinting, screw fixation immobilizes the jaw with fewer limitations for the patient.
This procedure helps properly align the teeth, prevent displacement of fragments, and promote optimal bone fusion. This method is especially relevant in cases of multiple lower jaw fractures, when anatomical repositioning and control over jaw position during surgery are necessary.
Before the procedure, a clinical examination and radiography and/or a CT scan are performed to assess the location and type of fracture. Then, a surgical plan is selected, and the jaws are modeled in their anatomically correct position.
The surgeon installs titanium screws in the intercoronal dental spaces intraorally, avoiding the mobile mucosa. If necessary, the fragments are repositioned and fixed with miniplates. Wire loops or elastic ties are then placed between the screws to fix the jaws in the correct position. This fixation can be used during and after surgery.
We use the latest models of titanium screws, miniplates, and modern osteosynthesis instruments for intermaxillary fixation.
The duration of intermaxillary fixation depends on the complexity of the fracture and the extent of the surgery. It usually lasts from 7 to 14 days. Once the fixation is removed, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity and gradually resume normal eating habits.
Benefits
Minimal trauma
Fixation with screws doesn't damage the mucosa and doesn't cause sores.
Patient comfort
Allows easier immobilization period, simplifies oral care and nutrition.
Fast installation
The procedure takes less time compared to traditional splinting.
Anatomical fixation
Provides a stable position of the jaws in the bite.
