X-ray-guided facet joint injection (1 spinal segment)
X-ray-guided facet joint injection is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at eliminating pain caused by inflammation or degenerative-dystrophic changes in the facet joints of the spine.
Under X-ray guidance, a spine surgeon injects an anesthetic and anti-inflammatory agent directly into the joint capsule, thereby blocking pain receptors, reducing inflammation, and restoring mobility. The procedure is effective both for acute pain syndrome and as part of the chronic pain diagnostics.
Before the injection, the patient consults with a spine specialist, who will evaluate the indications, the patient's clinical situation and any imaging data (e.g. an MRI or CT scan of the spine). If needed, lab tests, an ECG and relevant specialist consultations are prescribed. Patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents require prior approval from their healthcare provider to temporarily pause their medication. No special preparation is required.
The patient lies face down. Their skin is treated with an antiseptic and local anaesthetic is administered. Using fluoroscopic guidance, the surgeon positions the needle precisely in the facet joint. Using X-ray navigation, the specialist then injects the anaesthetic. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes. The patient usually feels an improvement immediately or within a few minutes.
Precise navigation is provided by an X-ray machine, which displays images in real time. We also use specialized needles, sterile instruments, and medications with high bioavailability and proven effectiveness.
Patients are advised to rest for 1–2 hours after the injection to prevent vascular and vegetative reactions. After this time, they can resume their normal activities. To consolidate the results, physical therapy, exercise therapy or subsequent radiofrequency denervation may be recommended. Repeat procedures are possible if necessary.
