Pediatric gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is a safe procedure during which the esophagus, stomach, and initial section of the small intestine are carefully examined using a thin, flexible device called a gastroscope.
The child and parents must meet with an anesthesiologist and a pediatrician 72 hours before the gastroscopy. They will examine the child, provide recommendations, and answer any questions. If the test is scheduled for the morning, the child is allowed to have a light dinner the night before. This could be yogurt or porridge, for example. No food is allowed after dinner. If the procedure is scheduled after 5:00 p.m., a light breakfast is permitted, but no later than 11 to 12 hours beforehand. The last intake of fluids should be no later than four hours before the examination. Only clear, non-carbonated, uncolored liquids are permitted, such as water, light sweet tea, or strained juice (e.g., apple). On the day of the procedure, it is best for the child to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Before the gastroscopy, the child and their parents will talk to the attending physicians, who will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions. The examination is performed while the child is asleep. They won't feel any pain during the sedation process. Using a thin, flexible gastroscope, the specialist carefully examines the esophagus, stomach, and the initial section of the small intestine through the mouth. The entire procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes. In some cases, it is necessary to take a photo of the mucous membrane or take a small tissue sample (biopsy) for histological examination. A specialist closely monitors the child's condition throughout the examination.
At Olymp Clinic, pediatric gastroscopy is performed using advanced high-tech equipment designed for young patients. We use thin gastroscopes, suitable for children of all ages, even the youngest. The devices are equipped with HD cameras that provide a clear image on a large screen, as well as special image enhancement modes that display the smallest changes. All equipment undergoes rigorous testing and sterilization, making the procedure as safe as possible.
The child is transferred to a comfortable private room for recovery after gastroscopy. Parents can be present immediately after the procedure and while the child is waking up. Recovery usually takes about 30-40 minutes. Once the child is fully awake, they receive an examination and individual recommendations for further nutrition and routine. On the day of the procedure, it is recommended to avoid active games, sports, and long trips.

Pediatric gastric and colonic mucosal biopsy
Endoscopic biopsy in children is a painless method of obtaining a small sample of tissue during gastroscopy or colonoscopy. The procedure helps identify the causes of chronic diseases, inflammation, digestive disorders, and other pathologies.
Pediatric colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is an examination which involves using special equipment to visually inspect the inner surface of the large intestine and the terminal ileum. The procedure helps identify inflammation, ulcers, polyps, and other changes that may cause abdominal pain, blood in the stool, constipation, or diarrhea. If the child has a polyp, a biopsy will be performed for histological examination. Then, the need for endoscopic removal will be determined.
