Myofascial Pain syndrome (MFBS)

A pathological condition characterized by pain in the muscles and their spasm due to the formation of trigger points - areas of increased sensitivity and tension in the muscle tissue.
MFBS develops in response to an imbalance in the work of muscles, leading to their overload and spasm. The main factor is trigger points, which, when pressed, cause acute, aching or cramping pain that can spread over a considerable distance and mimic a neurological disease. Trigger points are most often formed in large muscles such as the trapezius, quadriceps, or piriformis muscles. Disruption of muscle function leads to limited movement, pain, and even changes in posture.

Reasons

Postural disorders (scoliosis, kyphosis).

Prolonged stay in a forced position.

Degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine and joints (osteochondrosis, spondyloarthritis, spondylosis, intervertebral hernias, etc.).

Hypothermia.

Acute or chronic muscle overload.

Muscle injuries.

Vitamin deficiency.

Physical inactivity or, conversely, excessive physical (athletic) activity.

Emotional stress.

Symptoms

Local or reflected muscle pain.

Compacted painful areas (trigger points).

Limited mobility in the affected area.

Pain that increases with movement.

Stiffness of muscles.

Consequences

Without treatment, myofascial pain syndrome can lead to limited mobility and the development of secondary changes in the spine and joints, permanent muscle spasm, posture imbalance and the formation of compensatory disorders.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment
MFBS therapy is aimed at eliminating pain, restoring normal muscle function, and preventing relapses. Medications are used to help reduce pain and relax muscles. An important component of the treatment is physiotherapy, which improves metabolic processes in the affected tissues. Manual therapy and massage help to eliminate spasm and restore mobility by working through trigger points. Physical therapy strengthens muscles, prevents their overexertion.
alt
Surgical treatment
In difficult cases, when conservative treatment is ineffective, high-frequency denervation is performed. This minimally invasive surgical treatment method allows you to "turn off" pain impulses from the affected nerve endings using electric current. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and provides long-term pain relief.
