Bacterial arthritis

Bacterial arthritis, also known as septic arthritis, is a rare but serious infectious joint disease in which bacteria enter the joint.
Bacterial arthritis
Bacterial arthritis occurs when bacteria enter the synovial fluid of the joint, causing inflammation and pain. Large joints such as knees, hips, shoulders and elbows are most often affected.

Reasons

Penetration of bacteria through the bloodstream

Open wounds or surgical procedures

Sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea)

Infections after joint replacement

Symptoms

Severe pain in the affected joint, which increases with movement

Swelling and redness of the joint

Fever in the area of the affected joint

Fever, chills

General weakness and fatigue

Limitation of joint mobility

Consequences

Bacterial arthritis can lead to permanent joint damage. The destruction of cartilage and bones can cause chronic pain and impaired mobility, which can later lead to disability. If important joints such as knees or hips are affected, this may limit the patient's ability to walk.

Bacterial arthritis can also lead to the spread of infection throughout the body, causing osteomyelitis (bone infection) or sepsis, which is life-threatening.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment:
Treatment of bacterial arthritis begins with the appointment of antibiotics, which are administered intravenously to quickly fight infection. A course of antibiotics can last several weeks, depending on the type of bacteria and the body's response to treatment. It is important to start therapy as early as possible to prevent serious complications. To alleviate symptoms and prevent joint destruction, regular drainage of synovial fluid is performed to remove pus and bacteria.
alt
Surgical treatment:
In severe cases, when conservative treatment is ineffective, surgical intervention may be required. Surgery may include cleaning the joint of infection and damaged tissues. In case of deep joint damage, the surgeon may use arthroscopy to drain the pus through a small incision. In extremely severe cases, it may be necessary to replace the affected joint (endoprosthetics) in two stages.
