Chronic sinusitis
Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the paranasal sinuses, which lasts more than 12 weeks. The condition causes prolonged nasal congestion, which may be accompanied by nasal discharge or pass without it. Headaches and a feeling of pressure in the affected sinus area are also possible.
Chronic bilateral sinusitis is a form of the disease in which inflammation affects both sides of the sinuses. Pathology can also be associated with dental and gum problems, which leads to the development of chronic odontogenic sinusitis, which requires specific treatment.
Reasons:
Chronic respiratory infections
Allergic rhinitis
Curvature of the nasal septum
Nasal and paranasal sinus polyps
Polluted environment
The presence of foci of chronic infection, mainly teeth of the upper jaw
Immunodeficiency and oncological diseases
ANCA associated diseases (rheumatological)
Symptoms:
Constant nasal
congestion nasal discharge
Headaches and pressure in the sinuses
Decreased sense of smell and taste
Fatigue and weakness
Effects:
Chronic sinusitis can cause acute bacterial infections of the sinuses, which can spread to the eye socket area, which sometimes leads to the development of periostitis, abscess or phlegmon of the eye socket. Inflammation can also cause polypous transformation of the sinus mucosa and the formation of cysts, which further complicates the cleansing of the sinuses and creates a vicious circle of inflammation.
Treatment
Conservative treatment:
Medication is prescribed depending on the type of pathogen that the diagnosis will show. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics, as well as physical therapy and nasal flushing to improve sinus drainage. Antifungal drugs will be prescribed for fungal chronic sinusitis.
Surgical treatment:
In case of ineffectiveness of conservative treatment, as well as in the presence of polyps in the sinuses, surgical intervention is indicated. The type and scope of the operation are selected individually for each patient, and all possible treatment options are discussed with the doctor. The operations are performed using the modern FESS technique (functional endoscopic rhinosinus surgery) under the control of an endoscope, through the nasal cavity, without external incisions. The purpose of the surgical intervention is to eliminate the focus of chronic infection and restore normal function of the nasal cavity and sinuses.
