This is a painless instrumental study of the reproductive system in children.
Pelvic ultrasound helps assess the internal reproductive organs and the entire pelvic region. For younger and adolescent girls, the examination is performed transabdominally, through the anterior abdominal wall. Rarely, it is performed through the rectum. For sexually active girls, ultrasound is carried out using a vaginal probe.
There are different indications for pelvic ultrasounds, ranging from routine examinations to complaints of lower abdominal pain, irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding, and abnormal genital discharge. The examination is also carried out in cases of suspected pelvic neoplasms, urogenital system anomalies, and developmental disorders in girls. This procedure provides valuable information and helps determine the best course of action for the patient.
Gassy foods and drinks should be excluded from the diet 1-2 days before the procedure. This includes beans, carbonated drinks, dairy products, sweets, pastries, and raw vegetables. An hour before the ultrasound, the girl should drink about 1 liter of still water until the bladder is uncomfortable. This will help with imaging of the internal organs. The study is carried out 40–60 minutes after breastfeeding for children under one year of age. It is also important to explain to the child in advance that the procedure is quick, safe, and painless.
The child lies down on a couch and exposes the lower abdomen. A special gel to help ultrasound waves penetrate deeply is applied to the skin. Next, a diagnostician moves a sensor over the abdomen to display the pelvic organs on a monitor. The ultrasound assesses the shape, size, location, and structure of the uterus and ovaries, as well as other pelvic organs. The study takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
