Pediatric vaginoscopy
Endoscopic vaginal examination designed to detect damage and defects in the mucous membrane, foreign bodies, injuries, and congenital developmental abnormalities.

Vaginoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows for visual assessment of the vagina and cervix, including the mucous membranes. This procedure is essential for detecting abnormalities missed by a routine visual examination.
The procedure is indicated in case of suspected foreign bodies, trauma, congenital developmental abnormalities, or fistulas between adjacent organs (rectum, bladder), and to identify the cause of bloody or purulent discharge.
No special preparation is required. Prior to the examination, the girl should follow her usual hygiene routine. It is essential to provide a detailed overview of the procedure, and ensure that the patient and her parents are fully informed and comfortable with the process. The relevant informed consent forms must be signed.
Vaginoscopy does not usually require intravenous anesthesia. The patient is placed on a changing table, couch, or gynecological chair. An anesthetic gel is used to numb the external genitalia. A suitable diameter vaginoscope is selected, lubricated with gel, and gradually inserted into the vagina. Using a miniature optical device, the doctor examines the mucous membranes and the arches. If necessary, any foreign bodies are removed, bleeding is stopped, and samples are taken for analysis. This procedure is performed delicately, comfortably and takes about 5 to 30 minutes.
Vaginoscopy is performed using a thin optical device that combines a light source and a camera. It is connected to a monitor that allows to observe the procedure and track the progress of the vaginoscope.
After vaginoscopy, there may be slight discomfort in the vagina or lower abdomen, which disappears within 1–2 days.
