SIBO breath test
The hydrogen-methane breath test is a noninvasive method of diagnosing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This test measures the concentration of hydrogen and methane in exhaled air after the patient ingests lactulose. This helps identify an imbalance in intestinal bacterial flora.
Reliable results from the breath test require strictly following the preparation rules. Complete an antibiotic and antimicrobial agent course one month prior to the test. Stop taking vitamins, laxatives, or prokinetics seven days before the test. Twenty-four hours before the procedure, follow a prescribed diet that excludes foods that cause fermentation and gas, such as cabbage, legumes, complex carbohydrates, alcohol, dairy products, pickled vegetables, juices, onions, and garlic. Have a light evening meal, and do not eat for at least 12 hours before the test. During this time, refrain from smoking and chewing gum. The test is performed strictly on an empty stomach in the morning.
Before the test begins, the patient receives instructions and breathes into a special bag to record the initial levels of hydrogen and methane. Then they take a lactulose solution and breathe out every 15 to 20 minutes for about 2 to 2.5 hours. SIBO is detected based on assessments of increases in hydrogen and methane concentrations.
The test is performed using a gas analyzer, which records the levels of hydrogen and methane in the exhaled air. Disposable bags are used to collect samples. Lactulose solution is used as a diagnostic substrate to stimulate bacterial activity in the intestines.
No rehabilitation is required after the procedure. Patients can return to their normal daily routine and diet immediately after the procedure. There may be slight discomfort due to increased gas formation, but it will pass quickly.
