Is bleeding gums a sign of health problems?

Are your gums bleeding? The reason may be harmless, for example, incorrect tooth brushing technique. Or it may be related to a health condition that should be checked. We will tell you in detail about the causes and treatment of bleeding gums.

The gums began to bleed. What's the matter?

Gingivitis

Bleeding and/or inflammation of the gums are possible signals of gingivitis. This is a common and mild form of gingival tissue disease caused by plaque buildup.

If you have gingivitis, the gingival tissue may be irritated, red and swollen. It also bleeds when you brush your teeth.

In this case, you need to properly care for the oral cavity. Brush
your teeth twice a day, use floss, rinse your mouth daily with antibacterial solution, and visit the dentist regularly.

Periodontitis

If you have not eliminated gingivitis, it can develop into periodontitis. It is a chronic gum disease that damages the tissues and bones that support teeth.

With periodontitis, the gums can become inflamed, infected, and break away from the roots of the teeth. Gingival tissue can bleed from any action, whether it is cleaning or eating. Teeth become loose, there is an unpleasant smell from the mouth, an extraneous taste in the mouth.

For the treatment of gums with periodontitis, professional cleaning of the oral cavity is carried out in Olympus Clinics. During cleaning, our dentists remove plaque and tartar, and then sanitize the periodontal canals to eliminate the source of inflammation. After the procedures, you may be prescribed a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. If periodontitis is not treated, you can lose some of your teeth.

Diabetes

In diabetes mellitus, the structure of the walls of blood vessels changes. These changes can disrupt the blood supply to organs and tissues, including periodontal tissues. The gums become less resistant to infections.

If the dentist cannot determine the cause of bleeding gums, then it is worth checking the health of an endocrinologist.

Low in vitamin C

Vitamin C helps tissues grow and repair. It heals wounds, strengthens bones and teeth.

If there is not enough of it in the body, then you may feel weak and irritable, and the gums may swell and bleed over time.

To make up for the lack of vitamin C, you can take vitamin complexes and eat more foods containing it. Foods with a lot of vitamin C: oranges, lemons, grapefruits, strawberries, kiwi, red bell peppers, broccoli, spinach.

If bleeding of the gingival tissue persists or increases, make an appointment with a dentist for diagnosis.

Incorrect dental cleaning technique

In an effort to maintain a snow-white smile, patients may brush their teeth too vigorously. However, the gums are made of delicate tissue, so harsh cleaning can damage them.

Choose a brush with soft nylon bristles and blunt ends if you have sensitive gingival tissue. During brushing, massage and brush your teeth and gums with gentle circular movements.

Mistakes in using dental floss

The thread is an excellent tool for cleaning hard-to-reach places. But it needs to be used properly.

Instead of pushing the thread between the teeth, gently slide it up and down, following the curve of each tooth.

Treatment at home does not help. What to do?
