Ligament damage and rupture

It is a common injury, especially among athletes and active people who regularly put increased stress on their joints. Injuries can occur as a result of sudden and twisting movements (inversion of the foot) in the joint or improper loading when the ligament or its individual fibers are torn.
Ligament damage and rupture
Ligaments are dense structures that connect bones in joints and ensure their stability. Ligament damage or rupture can occur in various joints, including the knee, ankle, shoulder, and wrist. The injury can range from partial to complete rupture. In case of ligament damage, accurate diagnosis of the degree of rupture is important, as this determines the treatment method and recovery time. Ligaments, as a rule, have a limited ability to self-repair due to low vascularization, which makes timely medical intervention critically important.

Reasons

Sports, domestic and occupational injuries

Heavy physical labor, lifting weights

Previous injuries

Congenital or pathological deformities of joints

Joint diseases, the presence of bone growths

Symptoms

Acute pain at the moment of injury

Pain during movement that does not stop at rest

A hematoma with a fresh injury

Limitation of joint functions

Joint instability

Consequences

Without proper treatment, ligament damage can lead to chronic joint instability, which increases the risk of repeated injuries, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, or increased stress on the joint surfaces. This condition can cause chronic pain, limited mobility, and the development of osteoarthritis.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment
Conservative treatment of ligament injuries is aimed at relieving pain, reducing inflammation and restoring joint function. Immobilization allows you to give an optimal position in the joint for proper ligament fusion. Treatment also includes the use of decongestant measures, analgesic therapy, as well as a set of exercises to restore mobility and strengthen stabilizers around the damaged joint.
alt
In case of complete rupture of ligaments or instability, surgical intervention is required. In cases where the tear is fresh and there is a possibility of suturing, an operation is performed to stitch the ligament to restore its integrity. In difficult cases, the doctor may prescribe ligament reconstruction — the restoration of damaged ligaments using autografts (the patient's own tissues).
