Paraprosthetic infection

An infection that develops around the endoprosthesis of a large joint after surgery to install it. It can occur both immediately after surgery and after a long time.
Paraprosthetic infection
Paraprosthetic infection is one of the serious complications of joint replacement. In most cases, the infection is caused by bacteria that enter the area of the prosthesis either during surgery or after it through the blood.

Reasons

Bacterial infection

Surgical complications during surgery

Disorders in rehabilitation and activity after surgery

Old age and chronic diseases (diabetes, immune disorders)

Symptoms

Pain in the implant area

Swelling and redness of the skin

Local temperature rise

Limitation of limb mobility

Discharge from the wound (pus)

Common signs of infection (fever, chills, weakness)

Instability of the prosthesis

Consequences

Without timely treatment, the inflammatory process spreads to the surrounding soft tissues, muscles and bones, which significantly impairs joint function.

Permanent infection and tissue destruction may require complete removal of the prosthesis and complex reconstructive operations. In some cases, patients are forced to undergo repeated courses of antibiotics and revision operations, which increases the risk of disability.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment:
It is effective in the early stages, when the infection affects only soft tissues and does not affect the stability of the prosthesis. Basic methods: Intensive antibiotic therapy. Washing the joint cavity with antiseptic solutions. Physiotherapy to reduce inflammation and restore limb mobility. Regular observation by an orthopedic surgeon and joint condition monitoring.
alt
Surgical treatment:
It is necessary in case of deep tissue damage and instability of the prosthesis. Possible treatment options: Prosthesis revision: removal of infected tissues and replacement of polyethylene components of the prosthesis without removing the implant itself. Revision arthroplasty: complete replacement of an infected prosthesis with a new one. Arthrodesis: the creation of a fixed joint of bones when it is impossible to re-install the prosthesis.
