Osteomyelitis

Inflammation of the bone marrow, affecting all layers of the bone. It may occur as a result of infection, injury, or surgery.
Osteomyelitis
Osteomyelitis can develop as a result of infection into the bone tissue through the bloodstream, injury, or as a result of nearby purulent foci. This leads to inflammation of the bone marrow and subsequent damage to all bone elements.

Reasons

Infections caused by bacteria

Open bone fractures

Postoperative complications

Direct infection of the bone with wounds or injuries

Infection from nearby purulent foci

Violation of the blood supply to the bone

Symptoms

Severe pain in the affected bone

Local swelling and redness of the skin

High temperature (38-39°C)

Fever, chills

Increased soreness during movement

Formation of fistulas (in chronic course)

General intoxication of the body (weakness, nausea, vomiting)

Consequences

In the chronic form of osteomyelitis, a long course of the inflammatory process is observed, which is accompanied by the formation of sequesters — dead areas of bone surrounded by altered tissue. This condition can lead to the formation of fistulas and purulent cavities. Other complications may include impaired mobility of the affected limb, chronic pain and destruction of the bone structure, up to the loss of a limb or its function.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment:
Conservative treatment of osteomyelitis includes antibiotic therapy. An important part of the treatment is anesthesia and supportive therapy to eliminate intoxication, improve blood circulation and repair damaged tissues. Hemocorrection methods are also used to purify the blood from toxins in case of infection.
alt
Surgical treatment:
This is the basis for the treatment of osteomyelitis. The main task of surgery is the drainage of a purulent lesion. In the early stages, trepanation holes are made in the bone to remove pus and rinse with antiseptic solutions. In chronic osteomyelitis, sequestration and fistula are removed, as well as the rehabilitation of cavities formed as a result of the inflammatory process. In difficult cases, bone reconstruction or the installation of special fixing structures may be required.
