Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease that leads to the death of retinal cells, atrophy of the nerve fibers forming the optic nerve, and causes irreversible blindness.
Glaucoma in the initial stages is not accompanied by any symptoms. In glaucoma, due to the death of retinal cells in the periphery, and the emerging atrophy of nerve fibers, there is a gradual narrowing of the visual fields, which a person may not notice until the condition reaches a pronounced stage of the disease.
Reasons:
Increased intraocular pressure
Hereditary predisposition
Age (often develops in the elderly)
Inflammatory eye diseases
Eye injuries
Violations of the outflow of intraocular fluid
Symptoms:
Gradual decrease in peripheral vision
Tunnel vision
Pain in the eyes or head
Blurred vision
An unpleasant feeling of pressure in the eyes
A halo or rainbow when looking at objects of light (lantern, lamp)
Лечение
Conservative treatment:
The main method of treating glaucoma with increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the use of eye drops, which help reduce intraocular pressure.
Surgical treatment:
If medication does not have sufficient effect or glaucoma progresses, surgical methods may be indicated. For example, trabeculectomy is the creation of a new drainage channel for the outflow of intraocular fluid and pressure reduction. Fistulizing operations: the creation of a fistula to improve the outflow of fluid from the eye. Surgery may also include the use of a laser (laser trabeculoplasty) to improve the outflow of intraocular fluid and reduce pressure.
