Bursitis (inflammation of the periarticular sac)

Inflammation of the synovial sac (bursa), accompanied by the accumulation of fluid (exudate) in its cavity.
Bursitis (inflammation of the periarticular sac)
Synovial bags (bursae) are located around the joints and serve to reduce friction between bones, tendons and muscles. With inflammation, the bursa increases in volume due to the accumulation of fluid, which causes discomfort and restricts movement.

Reasons

Joint injuries (bruises, falls)

Infections (most often staphylococcal)

Constant mechanical irritation

Chronic diseases (gout, rheumatoid arthritis)

Immune disorders, alcoholism, diabetes mellitus

Symptoms

Pain in the affected area

Swelling and redness of the skin above the joint

Local temperature rise

Limitation of joint mobility

General malaise and fever

Consequences

If bursitis is not treated, the inflammation can turn into a chronic form with periodic exacerbations. This can lead to persistent limitation of joint mobility and chronic pain. In severe cases, purulent inflammation may develop with the formation of fistulas. With infected bursitis, inflammation can spread to surrounding tissues, leading to complications such as phlegmon, arthritis and sepsis.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment:
It is used in the early stages and includes providing rest for the affected limb, ice compresses to reduce swelling, anti-inflammatory and painkillers. It may also require a puncture of the bursa to remove fluid and the appointment of antibiotics in the presence of infection.
alt
Surgical treatment:
It is necessary if conservative treatment is ineffective or chronic purulent bursitis develops. Drainage is required — removal of accumulated fluid and rinsing of the cavity with antiseptics and antibiotics. In chronic recurrent bursitis, excision of the bursa is performed — complete removal of the inflamed bag. The operation is performed as planned, and the wound usually heals within 15 days.
