Tartar — what is it and why should it be removed?

These are hard dental deposits that are formed as a result of mineralization of soft plaque. Tartar increases the risk of developing caries. It also affects the appearance of a smile and can cause bad breath, bleeding gums. In the article we will tell you about the symptoms and methods of tartar removal.

Causes of tartar

The main reason is insufficient oral hygiene or lack thereof. Bacteria like sugar, which can be found in high concentrations in foods and beverages. Sugar promotes the growth of bacteria. The combination of saliva, food particle residues, mineral salts, and bacteria leads to the formation of tartar.

What does tartar look like?

Deposits on teeth can vary in color. They can be yellow, brown, gray or black. More often, the formations have a yellow or light brown color, and a darker shade under the gums. Black color is usually associated with active periodontal disease. Signals of the presence of tartar: bad breath, bleeding gums when brushing teeth, hypersensitivity of the gums, abnormal tooth mobility.

If you notice similar symptoms, come to the dentists of Olympus Clinics for treatment. They will draw up an individual oral care plan, as well as conduct professional hygiene.  This is a painless procedure, after which the teeth look lighter, and a feeling of freshness will appear in the mouth.

What happens if you don't treat it?

Caries: bacteria in the oral cavity lead to diseases of the hard tissues of the teeth.

Gingivitis: plaque can contribute to inflammation of the gums, cause inflammation of the gum tissues — gingivitis. Gingivitis signals are swollen, red, painful, bleeding gums. And if gingivitis is not treated, it can develop into periodontitis.

Prevention

The most important thing is careful home oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist every six months. We have collected useful tips that will help maintain the health and aesthetics of a smile:

Brush your teeth twice a day

Use a soft or medium-hard toothbrush (as recommended by a doctor). Cleaning should be carried out in the morning and evening. And ideally, rinse your mouth with water after each meal.

Brush your teeth for at least three minutes

Cleaning for three minutes removes 55% more plaque than cleaning for 30 seconds.

Do not forget about dental floss, interdental brushes and an irrigator

These are the first assistants in cleaning hard-to-reach places between the teeth.

Use antibacterial rinsing fluids

Antibacterial rinsing liquid has several advantages: it can freshen your breath, reduce the risk of plaque formation, dissolve food particles, and reduce the risk of caries formation.

Last tip: don't smoke

Smoking can reduce the amount of saliva. Saliva performs a protective function, helping to remove food residues, neutralize acids.
