All about self-ligating braces

A self-ligating bracket system is a variant of an orthodontic design with fewer metal elements — without ligatures. Ligatures are the elements that fix the arc in braces. The advantage of self-ligating braces is that the arc is fixed with miniature locks. A modern and more aesthetic view of the orthodontic system without unnecessary details. In the article we will talk about the types of self-ligating braces and the difference from the traditional system.

How does a non-ligature system work?

This type of construction does not require the use of elastic bands or metal clips to fix the arc. Instead, there is a mechanism that locks the arc in place. The mechanism looks like a small valve. Patients with a self-ligating system have fewer visits to the orthodontist for adjustment, shorter receptions, easier cleaning and more comfortable wearing.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment on a non-ligature system takes the same time as on a metal one. On average — from 12 to 24 months.

During treatment, the natural process of moving teeth occurs, and the ligature-free design helps to get a perfectly even smile with great comfort.

Types of self-ligating braces

Metal ones. Made of stainless steel, there is a self-ligation mechanism built into the braces. They ensure effective tooth movement. They are considered one of the most durable, reliable structures. At Olympus Clinics, we offer an American premium class system — H4. The passive self-ligation design gives the teeth freedom of movement and reduces friction. During the consultation, the orthodontists of Olympus Clinics can predict the result of treatment on the H4 system in advance.

Ceramic ones. They are made of transparent ceramic material, which makes them less noticeable on the teeth. Adaptation to the ceramic structure is easy, and the shade of the elements matches the color of the enamel. They may be prone to spots. A more fragile device than metal braces.

Sapphire ones. They are made of transparent sapphire crystal, which reduces their visibility on the dentition. An aesthetic and expensive option.

How does it feel on the teeth?

As with other types of braces, minor discomfort may occur at first, as the teeth get used to the structure. But after adaptation, you will not feel the device in the mouth and friction.

Do I need to tighten my self-ligating braces?

No need. The key advantage of this system is that the braces are adjusted independently, without the need to tighten them. But this does not mean that you are on your own. You will still need to see an orthodontist regularly to make sure that the treatment is going according to plan.

During regular checkups, the orthodontist monitors the progress of treatment and replaces the arch if necessary. These adjustments can increase or decrease the pressure on the dentition, depending on the goals of your treatment.

The advantages of self-ligating braces

  • There are no multicolored rubber bands, which makes them less noticeable.

  • Simplified tooth cleaning, the use of floss due to their design.

  • Gentle movement of teeth without discomfort.

  • Fewer visits to the orthodontist and shorter visit times.

Do I need braces without ligatures?

Most patients undergo orthodontic treatment in adolescence, but if you did not do this or if you had an injury that affected the appearance of a smile, come to the teeth alignment on the bracket system at Olympus Clinics. During the consultation, our orthodontists will conduct a thorough examination, tell you in detail about the types of ligature-free structures, help with the choice, prescribe orthodontic treatment taking into account your goals and budget.
