Sinus lifting — what is it?

Sinus lifting is an operation that is performed before the placement of implants in the upper jaw. It involves placing a bone graft between the upper jaw and the sinus membrane. After sinus lifting, the transplanted tissue fuses with the jaw, which makes it easy to install the implant. Let's talk about the indications for sinus lifting.

When do I need a sinus lift?

Dentists usually prescribe surgery if the height of the bone in the back of the jaw is less than 5 mm.

There are other reasons for plastic surgery:

  1. Your sinuses are too close to your jaw.

  2. The bone at the back of the upper jaw is too thin or not high enough.

  3. Insufficient bone size in the upper jaw due to prolonged absence of teeth.

Types of sinus lifting

Open sinus lifting

In the place of missing teeth, the doctor performs an incision of the gum. The gum rises up, opening access to the bone tissue. Then access to the maxillary sinus is created. A bone replacement material is placed in the created space, which eventually resolves and is replaced by its own bone. The open type may be necessary in cases where the volume of bone tissue needs to be significantly increased.

Closed sinus lifting

It is carried out simultaneously with the installation of the implant. First, the doctor prepares the place for the implant installation. Then an osteotome is inserted into this place, which raises the bottom of the maxillary sinus. After that, the implant is installed. This is a minimally invasive method with easier recovery. But there is a limitation - you can only raise the bottom of the sinus by 2-3 mm.

How is the operation going at Olympus Clinic?

Sinus lifting at Olympus Clinics is performed by experienced dental surgeons and candidates of medical sciences who specialize in implantology. They will surround you with care and support at every stage of treatment.

The first appointment

During the consultation at Olympus Clinics, dentists examine the oral cavity, conduct a 3D scan, perform an X-ray to assess the condition of your jaw, choose the right type of sinus lift.

Depending on the complexity of the intervention, sinus lifting can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. For example, if a bone is transplanted from the hip, then the plastic surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Process

After you are anesthetized, the surgeon makes an incision in the gum, and then opens a "window" in the jaw bone to expose the sinus membrane. The new bone material is then placed in the space between the jaw and the sinus membrane, and a collagen membrane can be fixed on top of the bone material to hold it in place. Then stitches are applied to the gum tissue.

After the operation

You may experience temporary swelling of the gums, bleeding from the nose or mouth. You may also feel a slight pain in your gums, which can be relieved with painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Dentists at Olympus Clinics prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory drugs for edema. After a week, your stitches will be removed, our dentists will check the progress of your healing, ask about possible concerns.. It is important to monitor the operated area so that healing goes smoothly. After the operation, our doctors will tell you which postoperative symptoms are the norm, and under which it is worth seeking help.

Usually, implantation after sinus lifting is performed after 4-9 months. During this period, the bone graft is integrated into the jaw bone. As soon as the gum heals, you will be ready to install the implants. Our specialists will stay in touch even after the end of therapy so that you can ask questions and share the results.
