I don't like my nose. Should I do rhinoplasty?

The nose is the central part of the face, which often causes dissatisfaction among many. In the age of social media, it's hard to maintain confidence and not get hung up on your appearance. We always remind patients that they should not compare themselves with other people, but should find perfection in their own highlights. But if the appearance of the nose makes you doubt your beauty, should you have rhinoplasty? Let's tell you what difficulties can be and what the nose looks like after rhinoplasty.

Can I have rhinoplasty? About contraindications

Olga Gennadievna Yakovleva, our plastic surgeon, told us all about rhinoplasty

To understand if the operation is dangerous for you, it is important to check your physical health. Here are the main limitations to the operation:

  • Acute infections: Active infectious diseases are a temporary contraindication. Any inflammatory processes should be cured before surgery.

  • Chronic diseases in the acute stage: Untreated diabetes, hypertension, heart and lung diseases can increase the risk of complications during surgery and during recovery.

  • Problems with blood clotting: Coagulation disorders (for example, hemophilia) can become an obstacle to surgery.

  • Psychological instability: It is important to be psychologically prepared for changes in appearance.

  • Age: At a young age, when the nose is still growing (usually up to 18 years old), surgery can only be performed for medical reasons.

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Rhinoplasty is not recommended for pregnant women.

Olymp Clinic doctors carefully examine patients before rhinoplasty to identify possible contraindications and minimize risks. If necessary, consultations with other specialists are appointed to fully assess the state of health.

Super! I am ready for a nose correction. What types of rhinoplasty are there?

Plastic surgeons mainly use two approaches to performing rhinoplasty — open or closed. In addition to these approaches, there are various types of nose correction. We will tell you about each type so that it is easier for you to decide which rhinoplasty is best for you.

But before that, let's look at the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty.

By access method:

If you are interested in rhinoplasty, you may have heard that there are open and closed rhinoplasty. This separation means only the access through which the operation is performed. But this factor does not affect the final result.

With open access, the incision will pass through the visible part of the columella (the area of skin between the nostrils). When closed, the incision is located inside the nose.

And now we turn to the types of rhinoplasty:

Aesthetic rhinoplasty is an operation aimed at improving the shape and proportions of the nose, creating harmony with the rest of the facial features. Regardless of whether you want to reduce the hump and change the back of the nose, adjust the tip, change the width and length, correct the asymmetry, adjust the shape of the nostrils and wings of the nose, our experienced surgeons will help you achieve the desired result.

Correction of the tip of the nose is performed in cases where the back of the nose is smooth and does not require changes, but the patient has a request to improve the tip area. The operation is characterized by less interference with internal structures, focusing on the cartilage of the tip of the nose.

Septoplasty is the correction of the nasal septum. An uneven nasal septum can cause respiratory problems and also contribute to the accumulation of mucus. The latter increases sensitivity to infections, which provokes a chronic runny nose. Deformation or displacement of the nasal septum can be either as a result of congenital malformations or due to a nasal injury.

Septorhinoplasty is an operation to restore the correct position of the nasal septum, improve breathing and correct the shape of the nose.

Reconstructive rhinoplasty is a type of rhinoplasty to restore the structure of the nose after injury, surgery or birth defects. Often, reconstructive rhinoplasty may require additional cartilage material, which is taken from the septum of the nose, ear or rib. Our Olympus Clinic surgeons carefully discuss the details of the operation with the patient during the consultation.

Recovery after rhinoplasty

Nose correction is an operation for the patient. Therefore, do not rush to evaluate the nose immediately after rhinoplasty: the final result is formed throughout the year, and the first changes will appear in 10-14 days. They told me what to expect at each stage of rehabilitation.

The early days

Usually, after rhinoplasty, the patient stays in the Olymp Clinic hospital for a day, where a plastic surgeon, an anesthesiologist, and clinic staff take care of his safety around the clock. To make the recovery as comfortable as possible, the patient is provided with three meals a day from the chef (you can eat anytime, the staff will bring food to the ward), a functional bed, a private bathroom with nursing supplies, a staff call button, high-speed Wi-Fi and a window with a romantic view of Moscow.

As for how you feel, your nose doesn't hurt after surgery! But the increasing swelling can cause discomfort and headache. However, these symptoms are relieved by analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Bruises around the eyes after rhinoplasty do not always occur. About five days after the operation, the patient is sent to the cosmetology department, where doctors use laser treatment to remove even the most noticeable bruises. Only one or two procedures are required, and the result is visible within 24-48 hours after the session.

The swelling increases for the first two to three days. This may be the cause of nasal congestion. Small bloody discharge from the nose is also possible. It is important to follow all the doctor's recommendations. Sometimes the rehabilitation process can be accelerated from the very first days. In the hospital, doctors prescribe an individual recovery plan using decongestant and antioxidant medications, ivs and magnetic therapy.

The first 10 days

During this period, the doctor removes the plaster splint and stitches. Patients are advised to rest more, sleep with their head raised (additional pillows can be used) and limit sports activities. Take care of yourself while your body is recovering. Ask your loved ones to help you with household chores and just be there to make rehabilitation more enjoyable. Olympus Clinic specialists always keep in touch with patients, answer any questions that arise and, if necessary, schedule additional visits.

Up to a month

The swelling will gradually go away. At this stage, it is important to understand that this is an inconclusive result. The further form will gradually improve. This stage can be accelerated with the help of physiotherapy procedures in the cosmetology department.

Year

We waited! At this stage, you can safely assess the shape of the nose, the tissues have fully recovered. All restrictions and prohibitions are lifted.

How to choose a plastic surgeon?

Head and heart. The first thing is necessary in order to protect yourself: study the reviews of other patients, check the doctor's education, places of work, specialization, and work results. Prepare the questions before the meeting with the doctor, and write down the answers so that you don't miss anything. And what about the heart? Analyze whether you are comfortable communicating with the surgeon. Does he inspire confidence in you or do you not feel confident around him? You will have to have a lot of contact and see a plastic surgeon. It is important that you like him not only as a specialist, but also as a person.

Plastic surgeons at Olympus Clinics understand the importance of getting to know the patient for the first time, so they conduct an open dialogue, answer all questions in human language, and advise taking time to reflect on the need for surgery. On the Olympus Clinics website you can read about each doctor, as well as learn more details about the operation. For example, how rhinoplasty works, what indications, contraindications to surgery, which tests should be passed, what the results of our plastic surgeons' work look like. And remember, when it comes to your peace of mind, there are no stupid questions for the specialists of Olympus Clinics.
