Summer, sun, heat: moisturizing the skin in the warm season

The scorching rays of the sun do not spare anyone: even if you are not a fan of tanning, your skin can also become dry. This is because the ultraviolet rays of the sun can damage the top layer of the skin, causing loss of moisture and natural fats: squalene, ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids and triglycerides. How to keep a sea tan or healthy snow-white skin in the heat? Let's talk about summer skin care.

It's not just the sun that's to blame. Why is the skin dry in summer?

And even if you have normal or combination skin, it can become dry in the summer months. About skin care in the hot period and our patients' favorite procedure Hydrafacial was told by our cosmetologist, dermatologist Olympieva Anastasia Sergeevna.

Moving on to other reasons:

  • Frequent swimming in the pool: The skin may also feel rough if you spend a lot of time in the pool to escape the heat. Chlorinated water steals the natural pH (acid-base balance) of your skin, which leads to its dryness.

  • Staying under air conditioning: Indoor air conditioners create dry air, which additionally prevents the skin from retaining moisture.

  • Sweating: The skin loses a lot of water through sweat and eventually becomes dehydrated. And the condition can get worse if you don't drink enough water.

  • Lack of hydration: In summer, some people use less moisturizing products, mistakenly considering them unnecessary in the heat.

But this does not mean that you need to hide at home and avoid the sun completely. You need to be more careful with your skin to keep it nourished. We have compiled useful tips on how to do this:

  • Take a shower immediately after leaving the pool.

  • Before going outside, apply a waterproof sunscreen with a high level of protection: SPF 30+.

  • Use mild skin care products to wash your skin. Soaps and shower gels marked "antibacterial" or "deodorizing" can dry the skin.

  • Take a shower and a bath with warm, not hot water.

  • Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer after a shower.

  • Carry a moisturizer with you so that you can apply it after washing your hands or when your skin becomes dry.

  • Increase the temperature of the thermostat if the air conditioner makes the air in the house too dry.

Summer Skin Care

Oily skin type

Oily skin prone to dryness may seem like a contradiction, but it's a common problem. Due to the excessive production of sebum (sebum), the skin may be oily on the surface, but dehydrated in deep layers.
Rules of care
Deep Cleansing: Use mild cleansing products. But even oily skin does not need to be cleaned "to the creak" to remove sweat, dirt and excess fat.
Hydration: Try using a light moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. You can choose a mattifying cream to control the shine, but at the same time get enough hydration.
Masks and serums: Regular use of moisturizing masks and serums with components of a natural moisturizing factor (hyaluronic acid, urea, amino acids, glycerin, lactic acid) can significantly improve skin hydration. These products deeply moisturize and restore the barrier function of the skin, helping it to remain supple.
Exfoliation: Use mild exfoliating products based on lactic or almond acid. It helps to remove dead skin cells, cleansing pores and improving skin texture without disturbing its hydrolipidic balance.
Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to your skin daily to protect against sunlight and prevent dehydration.
Additional hydration: Throughout the day, use moisturizing sprays or facial mistes to refresh and moisturize the skin.

Dry skin type

Dry skin is especially prone to dehydration and sensitivity, which can increase in summer due to elevated temperatures and sunlight.
Rules of care
Gentle Cleansing: Use mild cleansing products that do not wash away natural fats and do not cause a feeling of tightness. Choose products with a creamy texture that remove impurities, but retain softness and smoothness.
Intensive moisturizing: Immediately after cleansing, apply a greasy cream with ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides, urea, hyaluronic acid.
Serums and Essences: The inclusion of moisturizing serums or essences with hyaluronic acid or vitamin B5 can provide additional hydration. These products are suitable for moisturizing dry skin during the summer months.
Face masks: Regular use of moisturizing masks, especially those based on aloe vera, amino acids, glycerin or collagen, can give the face softness and radiance.
Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to your skin daily to protect against UV rays.
Additional care: Include indelible nourishing masks in your care. They can be applied overnight for intensive recovery, nourishment of the skin, and washed off in the morning.

Combined skin type

The combined type with the problem of dryness and greasiness is a more difficult task that requires different care for different areas of the face. In summer, high humidity and heat increase the fat content of the T-zone, while the cheeks may become drier.
Rules of care
Cleansing: Use mild, pH-balanced cleansing products that will not disrupt the skin's natural pH balance. Clean the T-zone more thoroughly to control the oiliness of the skin.
Moisturizing: Apply light serums, cream gels with a moisturizing effect to the entire face area.
Masks and serums: You can try the "multimasking" technique: apply cleansing and matting products to the T-zone, and moisturizing and nourishing products to dry areas. It is better to choose serums with components such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.
Spot treatment of acne: Acne on oily areas of the skin should be treated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Sun protection: Daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is necessary to protect the skin from sunlight and prevent dehydration. Choose formulas for the combined type so that they do not contribute to fat content.
Additional care: During the day, use moisturizing facial sprays to refresh dry skin areas without adding shine to oily ones.

I want maximum hydration. What to do?

In order not to overdo it with care in pursuit of radiant skin, come to the Hydrafacial skin cleansing procedure at Olympus Clinics. This is a favorite among our patients, as the procedure is suitable for all skin types and helps to solve many problems: enlarged pores, comedones, post-acne, dryness, age-related changes.
Stages of the Hydrafacial procedure

Cleansing and exfoliation:
The cosmetologist uses a device with a vacuum nozzle to gently cleanse the skin. At this stage, dead cells and surface impurities are removed.
Acid peeling:
A mild peeling based on glycolic and salicylic acid is applied to the skin. This step helps to clean the pores deeper, remove more persistent impurities without irritation.

Extraction:
The device with a vacuum nozzle removes black dots and deeply cleanses the pores. This stage helps to get rid of impurities that cause acne and inflammation.
Hydration and nutrition:
The cosmetologist applies serums with antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to the skin. These serums deeply moisturize the skin, nourish and protect it.
Protection:
At the last stage, moisturizers and sunscreen products are applied to the skin to preserve the result and protect it from the harmful effects of the environment.
