When do I need dental prosthetics?

Dental prosthetics is the restoration of destroyed teeth. Prosthetics are necessary when more than half of the tooth tissues have been lost, and in other cases, the tooth can be restored with a seal.

Tooth decay occurs due to many factors – caries, trauma, chronic abrasive effects on the enamel, exposure to copious amounts of acids from fruits or sodas, aggressive brushing with hard toothbrushes, gnashing of teeth, improper care. All this leads to the destruction and wear of teeth of varying degrees. Depending on this, the prosthesis for the restoration of teeth or a tooth
is selected individually.

Ramila Kamalovna Allahverdieva, an orthopedic dentist at Olympus Clinics, told all about prosthetics.

What are the types of prostheses in dentistry?

Implants

If a tooth is missing from the oral cavity for some reason, for example, it was previously removed, or there are indications for the removal of a destroyed tooth, then you can restore the missing tooth with the help of implantation.

Implants are an analogue of a titanium tooth root. After the implant is inserted into the bone, it fuses with the bone tissue. This process is called osseointegration and it lasts three to four months. After that, the implants can be prosthetically repaired, that is, restored with crowns that completely mimic a natural tooth.
In case of complete loss of teeth, six or eight implants are installed in the oral cavity, on which a single zirconium structure is fixed, restoring a complete dentition. The design looks aesthetically pleasing, natural and completely restores the functionality of the teeth.

Veneers

Veneers are suitable if their teeth do not aesthetically satisfy the patient in shape, texture, size. The problem can be corrected with thin ceramic restorations, which, when glued to the tooth, become one with it. Veneers cannot peel off, and the tooth becomes stronger.

A veneer is a protective plate that, when fixed to a tooth, prevents its further physiological wear, since ceramics are denser than enamel and more wear—resistant.
Destroyed teeth are restored with ceramic or zirconium crowns. These are protective caps that lock onto prepared teeth. The choice of material is determined by the doctor.

Crowns

Crowns are ceramic or zirconium restorations that recreate a natural tooth and cover it completely, protecting it from further destruction.

Bridge-like structures

This is a type of non-removable prosthesis that is fixed on two or more teeth when teeth are lost between the supporting ones. This method of tooth restoration is used with a missing tooth, which replaces the suspended one, relying on two or more adjacent teeth. Bridge-like structures are used under certain conditions of a clinical case in the oral cavity. Only a doctor will be able to select and advise an effective, durable design.

Bridge-like structures in modern dentistry are made of zirconium with ceramic cladding. Or without it for the most natural and natural anatomy of the tooth.

Bridge-like structures made of cermet are a thing of the past, as they are less aesthetic, as well as short-lived and leaky.

Previously, removable dentures, clasp prostheses, and metal-ceramic structures were used in dentistry. In modern dentistry, such methods of restoring chewing function are rarely returned, since these designs are short-lived and lead to a number of complications after use.

How long do dentures last?

Ceramic veneers and crowns serve exactly as long as their own teeth serve with proper care, namely: examination by a dentist every six months, professional hygiene every six months and proper cleaning using gentle toothbrushes and pastes. It is with such oral care that your smile will delight you for many years to come!
