Varicose veins on the legs
A disease in which the subcutaneous veins of the legs enlarge, become sinuous and form nodes due to a malfunction of the venous valves and reverse blood flow. This leads to stagnation of blood in the veins and deterioration of blood circulation.
Varicose veins occur in 30-60% of the adult population. Due to hormonal characteristics, the disease is slightly more common in women than in men.
Reasons:
Hereditary predisposition
Overweight
Standing or sitting for a long time
Age-related changes in the venous wall and valves
Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause)
Sedentary lifestyle
Wearing tight clothes or shoes
Symptoms:
Visible varicose veins and bumps on the legs
Feeling of heaviness and swelling in the legs
Pain and fatigue in the legs
Swelling that increases in the evening
Cramps in the legs, especially at night
The appearance of trophic ulcers
Effects:
One of the most common consequences of the disease is chronic venous insufficiency, in which there is constant swelling of the legs, trophic skin changes and the development of venous ulcers.
Another serious complication is thrombophlebitis, inflammation of the vein wall with the formation of blood clots. Blood clots can separate and move through the bloodstream, which is life-threatening. In addition, patients with varicose veins are prone to developing deep vein thrombosis, which can also lead to serious consequences.
Лечение
Conservative treatment:
It is aimed at slowing the progression of the disease and improving symptoms. Treatment includes wearing compression underwear, which helps maintain proper blood flow and reduces swelling. Phlebotropic drugs are also prescribed to strengthen the walls of veins and improve microcirculation. Topical ointments and gels help reduce swelling and pain, but they do not eliminate the cause of the disease. Patients are advised to avoid prolonged standing and sitting, maintain a normal weight, exercise, and monitor salt and fluid intake.
Surgical treatment:
Surgical treatment of varicose veins includes several methods. One of the classic ones is phlebectomy — removal of the affected veins through incisions. This method is effective, but requires rehabilitation. Modern methods such as endovenous laser obliteration (EVLO) and radiofrequency ablation (RF) are based on thermal action on the vein wall, which allows you to "brew" its lumen without incisions. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a substance into a vein that glues its walls.
