Tunnel syndrome
A disease that occurs due to nerve compression. The pathology is most often found in the wrist and elbow area.
The main mechanism of occurrence of tunnel syndrome is that a nerve passing through a osteofibrous or muscular canal is compressed due to surrounding tissues, edema or deformity of structures. Compression of the nerve causes a disruption in its nutrition, which leads to pain, tingling and numbness. Tunnel syndromes can develop gradually due to chronic overload or occur after injury or prolonged exposure of the arm in an uncomfortable position. The most common type of tunnel neuropathy is carpal tunnel syndrome, in which the median nerve is compressed. In the second place is cubital syndrome, associated with compression of the ulnar nerve in the area of the elbow joint.
Reasons
Keeping your hand in one position for a long time.
Frequently repeated movements (flexion and extension at the joints of the hand and elbow).
Upper limb injuries.
Inflammation of the tendons surrounding the nerve.
Joint diseases (osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis).
Symptoms
Numbness and tingling.
Burning or stabbing pain, worse at night.
Weakness of the hand muscles, clumsiness of movements.
Increased symptoms when bending or holding the arm in a fixed position.
Consequences
In the mild stages, the pathology causes periodic pain and numbness, which eventually become permanent. In the later stages, the muscles may atrophy, especially the muscles of the hand.
Лечение
Conservative treatment
The doctor may recommend wearing an orthosis that fixes the joint in the correct position, as well as prescribe medications to relieve pain and inflammation. Special exercises can help prevent muscle atrophy and improve blood circulation. Conservative treatment lasts an average of 2-3 months.
Surgical treatment
It is indicated in cases where there are signs of persistent loss of sensitivity. The operation is aimed at eliminating nerve compression by dissecting the compressive structures. The procedure is low-traumatic and requires a minimum period of rehabilitation. At our OlympClinik Mars Center for Hand Surgery and Microsurgery, patients can undergo minimally invasive surgical treatment as soon as possible and even on the day of treatment.
