Rotator cuff rupture
An injury characterized by damage to the tendons that surround the shoulder joint and ensure its mobility.
The rotator cuff of the shoulder consists of the tendons of four muscles: supraspinatus, subacute, small round and subcapular. These tendons ensure the stability of the shoulder joint and its mobility.
Causes
Shoulder injury (fall, impact)
Degenerative tendon changes (as a result of aging)
Constant physical activity and monotonous movements
Genetic predisposition to tissue weakness
Anatomical features of the shoulder joint structure
Symptoms:
Acute pain in the shoulder, especially when moving the arm
Limitation of shoulder mobility, inability to raise an arm
Pain radiating to the neck, forearm or hand
Weakness in the arm
Inability to sleep on the side of the injured shoulder
After-effects
Without treatment, a torn rotator cuff can lead to significant loss of shoulder function, including the inability to perform everyday activities such as lifting an arm or carrying weights. In case of a complete rupture, complete loss of mobility in the shoulder joint is possible.
Лечение
Conservative treatment:
In case of partial rupture or minor damage to the rotator cuff, conservative treatment is often prescribed. It includes painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy. It is important to fix the arm with a splint or bandage to minimize further tissue damage.
Surgical treatment:
In case of complete rupture of the rotator cuff or if conservative treatment does not give results, surgical intervention is recommended. During the operation, the surgeon pulls the torn tendon and secures it back to the bone using special anchor clamps. Arthroscopy is a less invasive method in which a camera is inserted through a small puncture and the doctor repairs damaged tissue without large incisions.
