Nasal and paranasal sinus polyps

These are benign neoplasms that arise from the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity or sinuses as a result of various pathogenic effects on it.

Nasal and paranasal sinus polyps
Paranasal sinus polyps are soft—tissue, painless formations that arise from the mucous membrane of the nose or sinuses. They can form as a result of chronic inflammation, allergic reactions or exposure to adverse factors such as occupational hazards (inhalation of chemicals, biological agents, dust of various origins, smoke and other irritants). Polyps can vary in size and number: they can occupy a small part of the nasal cavity or completely fill it. Sometimes cysts and polyps of the maxillary sinuses occur together, which exacerbates the symptoms.
Reasons:

Chronic allergic rhinitis

Asthma

Chronic sinusitis

Hereditary predisposition

Smoking and air pollution, as well as occupational hazards (for example, working with chemicals in hairdressers and builders, exposure to biological factors in veterinarians, prolonged inhalation of vapors in cooks and other professions).

Symptoms:

Prolonged nasal congestion, sometimes one-sided

Prolonged nasal discharge

Decreased or loss of sense of smell

Headaches and pressure in the sinuses

Snoring and sleep apnea

Feeling of heaviness in the face

Effects:

Polyps can lead to chronic obstruction of the nasal passages, making breathing difficult and increasing the risk of sinus infections. Patients may experience constant nasal congestion and impaired sense of smell, recurrent inflammatory processes in the nasal cavity and sinuses.

Лечение

Conservative treatment:
Conservative treatment:

Conservative treatment of polyps in the sinuses is aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing their growth. First of all, it is necessary to try to determine the cause of the disease, although this is not always possible. Allergy patients undergo comprehensive treatment under the supervision of an ENT doctor and an allergist. Therapy includes the use of sprays to reduce swelling and inflammation, irrigation therapy (nasal lavage), as well as antiallergic drugs. In the presence of infections, antibiotics may be prescribed. Conservative therapy is most effective in the early stages of the disease. However, with large polyps that make breathing difficult, surgery is usually required.

Conservative therapy is most effective in the early stages of the disease. However, with large polyps that make breathing difficult, surgery is usually required. Surgery to remove polyps from the nose and paranasal sinuses is performed in cases where conservative treatment does not give results. The polypous process is rarely limited only to the nasal cavity; most often, polyps become noticeable in the nose when they have already filled the sinus cavity where they originally formed. The amount of surgery depends on the prevalence of polyps. It is very important to remove polyps at the site of their primary formation; if only the visible part of the polyps in the nasal cavity is removed, a relapse may occur after a few months. Modern methods such as FESS (functional endoscopic rhinosinusosurgery) using video endoscopy make it possible to open sinuses affected by polyps through the nasal cavity and thoroughly clean them. This approach minimizes risks and provides a good result in the form of long-term remission, restoration of nasal breathing and normalization of sinus function.
