Hypothyroidism
This is an endocrine disease associated with insufficient production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland. This leads to a slowdown in metabolism and disruption of many body functions.
Hormones T3 and T4 play an important role in maintaining normal metabolism, and their deficiency affects the functioning of all body systems. In this regard, the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be diverse, affecting both the physical and mental health of the patient.
Reasons:
Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease)
Subacute and postpartum thyroiditis
Treatment with radioactive iodine or removal of the thyroid gland
Iodine deficiency
The use of drugs (amiodarone, lithium, interferon)
Hypofunction of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus
Hereditary predisposition
Age over 60 years old
Symptoms:
Constant fatigue and lethargy
An increase in body weight, despite a normal diet
Feeling cold and chilly
Dry, thickened skin, brittle hair
Puffiness
Constipation, decreased appetite
Slow speech, coarsening of the voice
Depression, impaired memory and concentration
Irregular menstruation or lack thereof in women
Cardiac arrhythmias and low blood pressure
Effects:
One of the most dangerous complications is hypothyroid coma. This condition is characterized by a sharp decrease in body temperature, respiratory disorders, seizures and loss of consciousness. The mortality rate in hypothyroid coma can reach 60%, even with timely medical care.
In addition, hypothyroidism can lead to the development of cardiovascular diseases, in particular, atherosclerosis. Patients often experience anemia, which exacerbates general weakness and fatigue. Disorders of the reproductive system are also common consequences of hypothyroidism. In women, this can lead to infertility, and in men, to a decrease in libido and erectile dysfunction.
Лечение
Conservative treatment:
The treatment of hypothyroidism consists in hormone replacement therapy with thyroid hormones, which normalize metabolism. The dosage of the drugs is selected individually by the doctor after a thorough diagnosis of the patient. The initiation of treatment requires a gradual dose adjustment, especially in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular diseases.
Surgical treatment:
Surgical treatment of hypothyroidism is usually not performed, since the disease is associated with insufficient thyroid function, and not with its pathological overgrowth or tumors.
